Our story

Where timeless romance meets historic charm

A 150-year-old chicory mill on the San Joaquin River, restored into one of Northern California's most atmospheric places to gather.

Nestled along the serene banks of the San Joaquin River in French Camp, California, The River Mill blends historic character with modern hospitality — a sophisticated yet genuinely welcoming setting for weddings, corporate gatherings and private celebrations.

Guests arrive along a picturesque walkway shaded by towering native oaks, through a landscape of roses, crape myrtle and seasonal planting. Beyond the open-air courtyard, the property unfolds into a series of rooms — the River Room, the Roasting Room, the Winery, the Board Room, the Tasting Room, La Bodega and the Garden Room — each with its own light and its own character.

From elegant evening affairs to Mediterranean-inspired luncheons, our team crafts the details: exquisite linens, fine table settings, a decadent wedding cake, and candlelight throughout the building. An on-site kitchen handles everything from interactive food stations to full-service dining, a thoughtfully curated bar pours both the classics and the curious, and a dedicated parking attendant takes care of arrival.

Whether you are hosting eighty guests or three hundred and fifty, the intent is the same: an enchanting atmosphere, meticulously run, so the people in the room can be entirely present.

A short history

One building, four chapters

  1. 1873

    A mill on the river

The building rises on the banks of the San Joaquin as a processing mill for chicory — the root roasted and ground into coffee. Its brick walls and timber beams were built for work, and they have outlasted everything built for show.

  2. 1972

    A family takes it on

The property changes hands. What follows is two decades of patient restoration: brick repointed, beams retained, gardens planted where the working yard had been.

  3. Early 1990s

    The doors open to celebration

After extensive renovation, The River Mill begins hosting conferences, seminars, luncheons, dinners and weddings — a working mill turned gathering place.

  4. Today

    Gardens, oaks and firelight

Eight raised brick beds of sculpted privets and seasonal flowers, a rose-lined walkway, towering native oaks, a fountain courtyard with a balcony above, and 18,000 square feet of rooms for 80 to 350 guests.

Celebrations that stay with people

Couples, families and companies have been gathering here for more than thirty years.

  • “We toured six venues and stopped looking the moment we walked through the gardens. The oaks, the brick, the fountain — our photographs look like a European estate.”
Alyssa & Marc · Classic Evening Wedding
  • “Everything was already handled — flowers, cake, linens, coordination. I spent my wedding day with my family instead of on my phone.”
    Priya S. · Garden ceremony, 180 guests
  • “We host our annual leadership conference here. Breakfast, lunch and the afternoon break run like clockwork, and the Board Room keeps the day focused.”
    Daniel R. · Corporate conference
  • “The Roasting Room at Christmas, with that fireplace going, is the most beautiful party room in San Joaquin County.”
The Whitfield Family · Holiday celebration
